Ricky Morton made his wrestling debut in 1978 at the Continental Wrestling Association. With his athletic prowess and sensational looks, he went on to become popular in a quick time. In 1983, h was dubbed as The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express along with Robert Gibson. He then started to wrestle for NWA Tri-State in 1981. That year, he went on to become the NWA Tri-State Tag Team Championship with Eddie Gilbert.

Morton was a part of Jim Crockett Promotions from 1985 to 1988. There he teamed up with Robert Gibson and won the NWA World Tag Team Championship. Following this, he was a part of All Japan Pro Wrestling. Later, in 1989 he joined the United States Wrestling Association and feuded with Mark Star and Chris Champion. From 1992 to 1993, he was in World Championship Wrestling. His last match was against Barry Wyndham in 1992.
