Sally Quillian Yates was born Sally Caroline Quillian on August 20, 1960, in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born to John Kelley Quillian and Xara “Mickey” DeBeaugrine Quillian. Her father was an attorney and judge and her mother was an interior designer.
After completing high school, Yates attended the University of Georgia. She has received her BA degree in journalism. Later, she went to the University of Georgia School of Law and earned her Juris Doctor degree. In there, she served as the executive editor of the flag publication, Georgia Law Review.
